3 Trimesters
Grades 12
Prerequisite: Spanish III (with at least a C- average)
Students will reinforce their knowledge of Spanish through authentic readings, videos, web sites, texts, direct instruction, TPRS, cultural projects and music. We will review structures and tenses from Spanish I, II and III with an emphasis of using the Spanish language for personal expression. In this advanced course, a solid command of the Spanish language is required. Students will continue to expand speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through authentic language practice. Spanish IV is conducted almost exclusively in Spanish and is a rewarding, yet challenging course. Students in Spanish IV may choose to take the course for credit through UW-BC. If they get an A or B for the first and second trimester (Spanish 203) they will receive 2 college credits plus 8 retroactive credits (for Spanish 101 and 103). If they get an A or B third trimester (Spanish 204), they will receive an additional 2 credits.
2 Trimesters
Grades: 11-12
Prerequisite: Spanish II/III (with at least a C- average)
Students will reinforce their knowledge of Spanish through authentic readings, videos, web sites, texts, direct instruction, TPRS, cultural projects, and music. We will review structures and tenses from Spanish I and II. Students will also learn the future, conditional, present perfect, and subjunctive tenses. Special emphasis will be placed on grammar and oral proficiency, with the goal of addressing and understanding global issues. Students will be introduced to various pieces of Hispanic literature Students will also participate in cultural celebrations, guided discussions, language activities, projects, games, songs, and presentations.
2 Trimesters
Grades: 10-12
Prerequisite: Spanish I (with at least a C- average)
Students will continue to foster their enjoyment of Spanish by reinforcing concepts and structures from Spanish I through the use of games, songs, readings, videos, web sites, texts, direct instruction, and Total Physical Response. We will continue to learn new vocabulary and verb tenses with special emphasis on the preterit and imperfect tenses. Through the use of realia in the target language, students will increase their proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In addition to improving non-native language proficiencies, students will acquire knowledge and understanding of Hispanic nations and cultures through readings and discussions. They will be expected to work collaboratively with individuals from international cultures through various forms of multimedia, including an Epals exchange, encouraging students to be open to diverse ideas and perspectives
2 Trimesters
Grades 9-11
Prerequisite: None
The objective of Spanish I is to provide students with the basic skills to communicate in the target language. Students will learn vocabulary and sentence structures through games, songs, readings, videos, web sites, texts, direct instruction and Total Physical Response. The focus of the class will be on pronunciation, basic vocabulary and grammar rules, and conjugation in the present, present progressive and simple future tenses. Students will be expected to read, write, respond to oral cues, and speak in the target language. Students will also be required to communicate and work in collaborative groups in a spirit of mutual respect. The ultimate goal of the class is to create global awareness and understanding, as well as spark an interest in further language study.
